Where it came from
Kanegon first appeared in the 1966 Japanese television series Ultra Q as a creature born from a boy's intense greed. The character, whose name is a portmanteau of the Japanese word for money, 'kane,' and the English suffix 'gon' from 'monster,' became an iconic figure in the Tokusatsu genre. Funko produced this Pop! figure as number 768 in their Television line to celebrate the legacy of the Tsuburaya Productions kaiju series, capturing his distinct coin-purse mouth and metallic skin.
The figure was designed with the typical Funko aesthetic, emphasizing Kanegon's bulbous, bronze-colored head and zipper-like details. By translating a mid-century suit-actor monster design into a simplified vinyl form, the designers aimed to appeal to fans of classic Japanese television while fitting into the broader Funko aesthetic. It was received as a nostalgic entry for international collectors interested in the deeper catalog of classic kaiju history.
