Where it came from
Leatherneck was released as part of the Funko Pop! Retro Toys line, designed to celebrate the nostalgic appeal of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. This figure, numbered nine in the series, depicts the iconic Joe infantryman as he appeared in the 1980s animated series and action figure line. The design focuses on his signature olive drab tactical gear and trademark cap, capturing the quintessential aesthetic of the Hasbro franchise during its height of cultural popularity.
The character Leatherneck was introduced to the G.I. Joe lore in 1986 as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving as the team's primary mortar specialist. Funko’s interpretation of the character aims to evoke the feeling of the original miniature figures while adhering to the stylized, large-headed vinyl aesthetic common to the brand. Reception has been largely defined by adult collectors looking to recapture childhood memories associated with the 1980s toy-etic media landscape.
