Where it came from
Leatherhead was introduced as part of the Funko Pop! Television line in 2017, representing the character's appearance in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. This iteration of the mutant alligator was designed to capture his formidable, armored aesthetic while maintaining the signature stylized proportions of the Pop! vinyl format, including the enlarged head and minimalist facial features.
The figure serves as a nod to the enduring popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, which has seen numerous toy iterations since its 1980s debut. Leatherhead, a complex character who shifts between being an antagonist and an ally to the Turtles, was selected for the series to appeal to long-time fans of the various animated adaptations. Upon its release, it became a sought-after piece for completionist collectors of the extensive Nickelodeon-era character lineup.
