Where it came from
Morpheus, numbered 159 in the Funko Pop! Movies line, was released to commemorate the influential 1999 science fiction film The Matrix. Designed in the signature stylized aesthetic of Funko, the figure features Morpheus in his iconic long trench coat and rounded sunglasses, capturing his role as the mentor and captain of the Nebuchadnezzar. The figure was produced as part of a wave that brought the film's central trio—Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus—into the company's expanding vinyl toy catalog, appealing to fans of the franchise who sought affordable desk-sized collectibles of cinematic icons.
The character design reflects the distinct cyberpunk aesthetic established by costume designer Kym Barrett, characterized by leather textures and minimalist, futuristic tailoring. Funko’s adaptation simplified these complex visual cues into the company's hallmark big-eyed, square-headed format, emphasizing the character's stoic demeanor. Upon release, this figure and its counterparts were well-received within the hobbyist community, serving as a nostalgic tribute to the groundbreaking action choreography and philosophical themes that defined the Wachowskis' original film.
