Where it came from
Princess Sapphire, also known as Princess Knight, was released as part of the Pop! Asia series to honor the foundational work of legendary manga artist Osamu Tezuka. Originally created in 1953, the character of Sapphire is widely considered one of the earliest examples of a female-led shōjo manga, characterized by her dual identity as a prince and a princess. This figure was designed to translate Tezuka’s signature clean, expressive aesthetic into the recognizable Funko vinyl form, maintaining the character's iconic blonde hair and royal regalia.
The figure serves as a tribute to the lasting legacy of Osamu Tezuka, often referred to as the godfather of manga, and his influence on global pop culture. By including Sapphire in the Pop! Asia line, collectors were provided a tangible link to the history of Japanese animation and the pioneering storytelling of the mid-20th century. The release was well-received among collectors who appreciate cross-cultural representation and historical animation icons, solidifying its place as a staple for fans of vintage manga.
