Where it came from
The R2-D2 Concept Series Pop figure was released to honor the original artistic vision of Ralph McQuarrie, the legendary concept artist whose work defined the aesthetic of the Star Wars galaxy. Produced by Funko as part of the Star Wars Celebration exclusive lineup, this figure replicates McQuarrie's early sketches of the droid, which featured a more humanoid, elongated silhouette and distinct stylistic flourishes compared to the final film version.
The design highlights the transition from concept art to cinematic reality, capturing the raw, illustrative style of the late 1970s. Collectors received the piece as a significant nod to the franchise's creative roots, appreciating the shift from the familiar blue-and-white industrial droid to the experimental, sharper lines depicted in the initial character studies. It serves as a tribute to the collaborative process between George Lucas and his design team.
