Where it came from
Rei Ayanami, as Pop! Animation figure number 745, was released by Funko to celebrate the enduring legacy of the seminal 1995 anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. The figure depicts the character in her iconic white plugsuit, capturing her stoic expression and distinct blue hair. This release was part of a broader expansion by Funko into classic anime properties, aiming to provide fans with accessible, stylized representations of characters that defined the mecha genre during the 1990s.
The design of the figure follows Funko's signature aesthetic, emphasizing the character's recognizable silhouette and minimalist features. By focusing on Rei’s standard pilot appearance, the design team sought to balance her complex, enigmatic personality with the simplistic, uniform nature of the Pop! line. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by the collector community as a long-awaited tribute to one of anime’s most influential and frequently analyzed protagonists.
