Where it came from
The Funko Pop! VHS Covers series was launched to tap into 1980s and 1990s nostalgia by pairing stylized vinyl figures with the iconic artwork of classic home video releases. The Rudy figure, numbered 15 in the series, celebrates the 1988 cult science fiction horror-comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Designed to capture the specific aesthetic of the film's primary antagonist, the figure is encased in a protective hard display box that mimics the appearance of a vintage VHS clamshell case.
The design team at Funko aimed to translate the exaggerated, colorful practical effects of the Chiodo Brothers' film into the signature Pop! aesthetic. By featuring the character Rudy alongside the original VHS cover art, the item targets film buffs and horror enthusiasts who appreciate the kitschy, imaginative tone of the movie. Upon release, the line was received as a decorative tribute to the bygone era of video rental stores, prioritizing visual presentation for collectors who display their items in-box.
