Where it came from
Released as part of the Funko Pop! Movies line in 2014, this figure commemorates the dragon Smaug from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The figure was produced as a larger 6-inch scale model to appropriately represent the immense size of the character within the film franchise. It captures the essence of the creature through Funko's signature stylized design, emphasizing a menacing expression and the distinct yellow eyes noted in the cinematic portrayal.
The design of this piece reflects a period when Funko was expanding its presence in the fantasy and film collectibles market. By focusing on the dragon's iconic gaze, the designers aimed to translate the intimidating presence Smaug held throughout the Tolkien adaptations. Upon its debut, the figure became a sought-after item among both film enthusiasts and collectors of the Pop! brand, serving as a prominent centerpiece in displays dedicated to Middle-earth characters.
