Where it came from
Released as part of the Pop! Games line, this figure captures the iconic protagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. First introduced by Sega in 1991, the character was designed to compete with Nintendo’s Mario by emphasizing high-speed gameplay and a rebellious, cool attitude that resonated with the burgeoning 16-bit console demographic.
Funko’s stylized interpretation of Sonic follows their signature aesthetic of a large, square-set head with oversized black eyes and a simplified, rounded physique. This particular number, 916, serves as a contemporary nod to the character's enduring visual design, which was originally developed by Naoto Ohshima. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by both long-time Sega fans and modern collectors who appreciate the character's global status as a cultural icon in gaming history.
