Where it came from
Speedee, the mascot of the original McDonald's speedee service system, represents a significant piece of fast-food history. Introduced in the 1940s by Richard and Maurice McDonald, the character was designed to symbolize the efficiency of the assembly-line kitchen model they pioneered in San Bernardino, California. The figure, often depicted as a chef with a hamburger-shaped head, served as the primary branding for the chain before being gradually phased out in favor of Ronald McDonald during the 1960s.
Funko released this stylized vinyl figure as part of the Pop! Ad Icons series, intended to celebrate iconic advertising characters that defined mid-century American culture. The design team focused on translating the mascot's classic, simplified aesthetic into the signature Pop! aesthetic, featuring the characteristic oversized head and minimalist features. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by collectors of both pop-culture memorabilia and corporate branding history, serving as a nostalgic touchpoint for those interested in the evolution of modern restaurant marketing.
