Where it came from
Captain Crook was introduced by McDonald's in the early 1970s as a primary antagonist to Ronald McDonald, designed to embody the mischievous side of the brand's marketing campaign. Clad in a striped outfit with a tricorn hat and an eye patch, the character served as a focal point for television commercials where he attempted to steal Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, reinforcing the product's identity through playful narrative arcs.
Funko included the character in their Pop! Ad Icons series as number 99 to commemorate the enduring legacy of 20th-century fast-food branding. The design team focused on maintaining the character's classic cartoon aesthetic, scaling down his distinct facial features and iconic costume to the signature stylized vinyl format that has become a hallmark of the company's broader exploration of cultural nostalgia.
