Where it came from
Sub-Zero, the iconic cryomancer of the Mortal Kombat series, was introduced by Midway Games in 1992 as part of the original character roster. This specific Funko Pop! iteration, numbered 1073 within the Games series, was released to celebrate the character's enduring legacy and his appearance in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film reboot. It captures the character in his modernized cinematic armor, emphasizing the intricate, tactical design choices that distinguish this version from his classic arcade sprites.
Funko’s design approach for this figure focuses on maintaining the cold, stoic presence of the Lin Kuei assassin while adhering to the brand's signature stylized aesthetic. By distilling the cinematic costume down to its core visual elements—such as the icy blue accents and the detailed mask—the figure appeals to both long-time fans of the fighting game franchise and collectors of contemporary pop culture memorabilia. Its release was met with steady interest from the gaming community, serving as a physical tribute to one of the most recognizable figures in martial arts gaming history.
