Where it came from
Released in 2013 as part of the initial Pop! Games line, the Sunflower figure depicts the iconic resource-generating unit from the popular tower defense franchise Plants vs. Zombies. Developed by PopCap Games, the original game gained massive popularity for its quirky art style and addictive gameplay, which Funko translated into their signature stylized vinyl form to capitalize on the title's widespread cultural footprint during the early 2010s.
The design follows the aesthetic established by the game's art director, Rich Werner, who crafted the franchise's distinct, humorous character designs. Funko designers adapted the Sunflower's large, expressive face and petal crown into the standard Pop! silhouette, emphasizing the oversized head and minimalist features that define the series. Upon release, the figure was well-received by fans of the franchise who sought affordable desk companions that celebrated the game’s transition into collectible merchandise.
