Where it came from
The Swinging Friar, the official mascot of the San Diego Padres, debuted in its classic form in 1958. Originally created as a caricature to represent the Franciscan friars who founded the Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the mascot became an iconic emblem of the franchise, eventually transitioning into the playful, barrel-chested character known by baseball fans today. Funko chose to immortalize this mascot as part of their Pop! MLB series, specifically as figure number 16, capturing the Friar mid-swing with his trademark tonsure and habit.
Designed in the quintessential Funko style, this figure features the oversized head and stylized facial features characteristic of the Pop! line. The design aims to balance the charm of a professional sports mascot with the simplified, collectible aesthetic that Funko fans expect. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by MLB fans and collectors alike, serving as a nostalgic nod to the Padres' deep-rooted history in Southern California baseball culture.
