Where it came from
The Cigarette Smoking Man Funko Pop, numbered 185 in the Pop! Television line, was released as part of a 2015 wave dedicated to the cult science fiction series The X-Files. This figure captures the show's primary antagonist, characterized by his stoic demeanor and his constant presence in the shadows of the FBI's investigation into the paranormal. The design team focused on his most recognizable traits, including his signature suit, graying hair, and the ever-present cigarette held in his hand, grounding the vinyl figure in the visual language established by actor William B. Davis throughout the show's original run.
The figure reflects the broader trend of Funko expanding their license catalog to include iconic television villains of the 1990s. While critics of the Pop! aesthetic sometimes note the uniformity of the figures' expressions, collectors of the X-Files line frequently praise this specific item for its thematic accuracy and ability to represent the conspiratorial atmosphere of the show. It remains a staple for fans interested in documenting the historical television landscape of late-twentieth-century investigative dramas.
