The Tapatio Man

The Tapatio Man, known as Don Tapatio, is the iconic mascot of the Tapatio hot sauce brand, which was founded by Jose-Luis Saavedra Sr. in 1971 in Maywood, California. The figure was released by Funko as part of their Ad Icons series, a line dedicated to honoring recognizable corporate mascots and cultural emblems. The character design stays faithful to the original branding, featuring the mascot in his signature charro outfit, complete with a wide-brimmed sombrero and a handlebar mustache, reflecting the traditional Mexican aesthetic the brand has utilized since its inception.

Funko’s interpretation of the Tapatio Man was met with enthusiasm by pop culture collectors who prize the Ad Icons series for its focus on everyday Americana and culinary staples. By shrinking the fiery condiment’s face into the standardized, large-headed aesthetic of a Pop! vinyl, Funko sought to bridge the gap between grocery store branding and shelf-displayable art. The figure arrived during a peak period for the brand's visibility, as Tapatio transitioned from a regional favorite to a ubiquitous presence in homes and restaurants across North America.
