Where it came from
Voltron, number 70 in the Pop! Animation line, was released to celebrate the enduring legacy of the 1980s animated series. The figure depicts the iconic Defender of the Universe, combining the classic aesthetic of the original super robot with Funko's signature stylized, large-headed vinyl design. It was created to appeal to both nostalgia-driven collectors of the 1984 source material and fans of the then-recent reboot, tapping into a broader cultural resurgence of interest in mecha-style animation.
The design process for this Pop! figure focused on translating the complex, multi-component geometry of the five lion robots into a simplified, uniform silhouette. By emphasizing the bold colors and the prominent chest plate detail, the designers aimed to make the character immediately recognizable despite the constraints of the vinyl form. Upon its release, it was well-received by the collecting community as a quintessential representative of classic animation history rendered in a contemporary collectible format.
