Where it came from
Zhang Fei is a central figure in the 14th-century Chinese historical novel 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms'. Representing the fierce and loyal general who served under Liu Bei, this Funko Pop! figure was released as part of the Pop! Asia series to celebrate the enduring cultural impact of these classic characters. Funko designed the figure to capture his iconic, formidable appearance, complete with his signature bushy beard and dynamic, warrior-like stance.
The figure reflects the broader intent of the Pop! Asia line, which sought to bring traditional Asian folklore and historical legends to a global collector audience. By applying the standardized, simplified aesthetic of the Pop! vinyl style to such a historically complex character, Funko aimed to make classical Chinese literature more accessible to contemporary fans of popular culture. The design focuses on his traditional depiction, prioritizing recognizable cultural identifiers that resonate with readers of the original text.
