Where it came from
The 62 mm tyre and hub assembly, identified by the LEGO set number 5248, was released during the late 1990s as a specialized supplementary pack. These components were designed to provide builders with larger, heavy-duty wheels suitable for creating robust vehicles or Technic-based models that required increased ground clearance and structural support. The design prioritizes functional durability, featuring a classic rubber-treaded tire paired with a sturdy, multi-spoke plastic hub that became a staple for builders tackling larger-scale automotive MOCs or technical builds.
During this era, LEGO expanded its portfolio of loose parts and accessory sets to allow enthusiasts to supplement their existing collections without purchasing complete retail sets. The aesthetic follows the mid-90s industrial design language of the Technic and specialized parts lines, focusing on utility and modularity. Upon release, these parts were well-regarded by the builder community for their versatility, eventually becoming a common legacy component for hobbyists aiming to incorporate off-road capabilities into custom vehicle designs.
