Where it came from
The 81 mm Tyres and Hubs set, numbered 5246-1, was released in the early 1980s as part of the LEGO Technic line, then known as Expert Builder. It was created to provide builders with a large-scale wheel option for complex, heavy-duty vehicle models, addressing the demand for components that could support the weight and scale of larger, more realistic mechanical assemblies.
The design focused on industrial utility, featuring a distinctively thick rubber tread and a robust plastic hub that became a staple for Technic enthusiasts of the era. The piece was well-received for its durability and versatility, appearing frequently in supplemental packs that allowed fans to retrofit smaller sets or design custom crawlers and rugged off-road vehicles.
