Where it came from
Released in 2016 as part of the LEGO Ninjago theme, the Airjitzu Battle Grounds set (70590-1) was designed to accompany the Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu television series during the 'Skybound' story arc. The set functions as a specialized arena for the Airjitzu play mechanic, which involved using pull-cord ripcord launchers to send minifigures into the air. The design team focused on creating a modular, interactive stage that could be combined with other Airjitzu sets to recreate the competitive training battles seen in the show.
The set features dual launch pads and target-based obstacles intended to challenge the precision of the spinning figures. As a centerpiece of the 2016 wave, it was marketed primarily as an action-oriented playset rather than a static display piece, reflecting the brand's shift toward incorporating dynamic, physical movement into the building experience. It was generally well-received by younger collectors for its playability and the inclusion of exclusive Airjitzu-themed minifigures.
