Where it came from
The Airjitzu Kai Flyer, released in 2015 as part of the Lego Ninjago 'Possession' wave, was designed to introduce a dynamic, physics-based play element to the theme. Drawing inspiration from traditional flying toys, the set features a brick-built handle, a gear-driven ripcord mechanism, and a molded plastic propeller designed to launch a minifigure into the air. This design departure prioritized kinetic interactivity, allowing children to recreate the Airjitzu training sequences depicted in the animated series.
The set was conceived by the Lego design team during a period when Ninjago was expanding its supernatural lore, focusing on the spectral challenges faced by the ninja. Kai, the Master of Fire, is represented here in his specialized Airjitzu suit, which features intricate, combat-ready detailing consistent with the season's aesthetic. Upon its release, the Airjitzu Flyer series was noted for its departure from traditional static building sets, successfully bridging the gap between construction play and active outdoor performance.
