Where it came from
The Alien Keytarist was released in 2021 as part of the initial wave of the LEGO Vidiyo series. This line was designed as an interactive music video maker, aiming to bridge physical construction sets with a digital augmented reality app that allowed users to scan minifigures to unlock special effects and character animations. The design of the Alien Keytarist features a vibrant, space-themed aesthetic with a stylized keytar instrument, reflecting the series' goal of celebrating diverse musical genres through imaginative, colorful character archetypes.
The concept behind the Vidiyo series was a collaborative effort between the LEGO Group and Universal Music Group to engage younger digital-native audiences. While the theme was innovative in its integration of app-based gameplay, it faced a mixed reception due to the platform's heavy reliance on a proprietary mobile experience. The Alien Keytarist remains a notable example of this short-lived, experimental period in the company's product history, characterized by its bold, eccentric visual design that diverged from traditional licensed themes.
