Basic Set Harbour

The LEGO Duplo Basic Set Harbour, released under the set number 2388-1, arrived during a period in the late 1980s when the Duplo line was expanding its thematic scope to include more complex, role-play-oriented environments. Designed for toddlers and younger children, the set was conceived to facilitate early cognitive development through open-ended play. It provided a maritime-themed construction experience that encouraged children to build simple structures like boats and piers while experimenting with basic mechanical concepts and spatial reasoning.

The aesthetic of the 2388-1 set reflects the quintessential Duplo design language of the era, characterized by oversized, chunky plastic bricks in primary colors that were safe for small hands and durable enough for active play. Like many items in the Basic series, the set was intended to serve as a foundational building block for a child's collection, allowing for seamless integration with other Duplo elements. It was generally well-received by parents and educators for its durability and its success in bridging the gap between tactile play and imaginative storytelling.
