Where it came from
BrickJournal, founded by Joe Meno, began in 2005 as a digital-only publication dedicated to the adult fan of LEGO community. Issue 9, released in the mid-2000s, arrived during a period where the publication was transitioning toward increased print availability and deeper editorial focus, aiming to bridge the gap between casual builders and the intricate, high-level MOC (My Own Creation) community that was flourishing online.
The editorial direction for this period emphasized the technical artistry of builders rather than just commercial product news. Issue 9 specifically focused on the evolving aesthetics of fan-built models, featuring interviews and tutorials that helped standardize the language of advanced building techniques. It was received as a essential resource for the growing demographic of adult enthusiasts looking for formal recognition of their creative contributions to the hobby.
