Bricks and half bricks and trolley

Released in the early 1980s, the 518-8 Bricks and Half Bricks and Trolley set was part of the foundational expansion of the LEGO Duplo system. Designed specifically for toddlers and young children, these sets prioritized safety through larger, chunkier bricks that were easier for small hands to grasp and impossible to swallow. The inclusion of a rolling trolley base highlighted the brand's early push toward mobile play, allowing children to build structures directly onto a functional vehicle component.

The Duplo line was created to bridge the gap between simple block play and the more complex System of Play offered by standard LEGO bricks. By maintaining a 2:1 size ratio with the original system, the designers ensured a degree of compatibility that allowed children to graduate to smaller bricks as they aged. The 518-8 set, like others in its generation, was characterized by the primary color palette of red, blue, and yellow that defined the aesthetic of early childhood construction toys throughout the twentieth century.
