Bricks and half bricks all colours

Released in 1978, the 521-8 Duplo set, titled 'Bricks and half bricks all colours', represents an early era of the Duplo system designed specifically for the tactile needs of toddlers. By scaling the standard Lego brick to twice the size in every dimension, the product line sought to bridge the gap between simple building toys and the intricate, potentially choking-hazard-prone system of the main Lego line. This specific set was intended to function as an essential starter pack, providing a foundational supply of basic building units to encourage open-ended play and fine motor skill development.

The design of the 521-8 set adheres to the quintessential Duplo aesthetic of the late seventies, focusing on primary colors and simplified geometric forms. The set was conceived by the Lego Group’s design department to be fully compatible with the larger brick system while ensuring maximum durability for younger children. Upon its release, the set was well-received by parents and educators who valued its robust construction and its success in introducing spatial reasoning concepts to a demographic that had previously been excluded from the brand's core building experience.
