Where it came from
Released in the early 1970s, this set belongs to the formative years of the Duplo line, which was introduced by the Lego Group to provide a safer, larger-scale building experience for toddlers. The set 520-9 was designed to serve as a foundational expansion pack, offering a tactile mix of standard bricks, half-bricks, and the iconic wheeled tolley bases that allowed young builders to add movement to their creations.
The design philosophy behind these pieces focused on chunky, ergonomic proportions that could be easily gripped by small hands, while remaining perfectly compatible with the classic Lego system. By emphasizing simple, geometric forms and primary colors, the set aimed to encourage open-ended play and fine motor development, eventually becoming a staple in early childhood educational settings across the globe.
