Where it came from
The LEGO Architecture Burj Khalifa, released as set 21008-1 in 2011, was created as part of the Lego Group’s collaboration with architectural artist Adam Reed Tucker. Designed to commemorate the opening of the world's tallest building in Dubai, the model aims to capture the structure's unique Y-shaped tri-axial geometry and tiered setbacks using a series of plates and slopes rather than traditional brick architecture. It was developed to offer adult builders a sophisticated, display-oriented experience that celebrates iconic feats of engineering.
Upon its release, the set was received as a milestone in the Architecture series for its success in translating a complex, non-linear skyscraper into a compact, recognizable desktop model. The design choices prioritize verticality and silhouette, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of the original building by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. It remains a notable entry in the collection for its early implementation of non-standard building techniques to achieve an authentic representation of modern high-rise glass structures.
