BYGGLEK box, medium

The BYGGLEK collection was released in 2020 as a collaborative effort between IKEA and the LEGO Group, designed to bridge the gap between creative play and domestic organization. The concept emerged from IKEA's research into the importance of play for child development, coupled with a desire to solve the common issue of loose bricks cluttering living spaces. By integrating the iconic LEGO stud pattern into the lids and fronts of the storage boxes, the designers transformed functional furniture into a modular base for building, encouraging children to incorporate their creations into the room’s decor.

The design was led by IKEA designer Andreas Fredriksson, who worked closely with LEGO designers to ensure the system adhered to the strict technical standards of LEGO connectivity. The resulting boxes were intended to be aesthetically neutral, fitting into the minimalist Scandinavian interior design language of IKEA while remaining rugged enough for daily use. Upon launch, the collection was well-received for its utilitarian approach, praised by critics for treating children's play as a legitimate element of home design rather than something to be hidden away.
