Where it came from
Released in 1979 as part of the Legoland Town series, the Car and Caravan set 656-1 represents a classic example of early system-scale vehicle design. During this era, Lego focused on simple, functional builds that encouraged imaginative play centered around family vacations and road travel, fitting perfectly into the growing miniature city layouts many children were constructing at the time.
The design utilizes the iconic, uncomplicated aesthetic characteristic of late 1970s Lego, prioritizing basic geometric forms and primary colors. It features a straightforward hatchback vehicle towing a modest caravan, a design choice that highlighted the company's commitment to modularity and interaction between different vehicle sets within the broader Town theme.
