Where it came from
The LEGO 623-2 Car and Caravan was released in 1974 as part of a foundational era for the brand, during a time when LEGO was expanding its 'Legoland' series to include more diverse vehicles and suburban themes. This set was designed to capture the burgeoning interest in family travel and recreational camping, utilizing the classic, chunky aesthetic characteristic of mid-1970s LEGO design before the introduction of modern minifigures.
The design follows the simple, efficient geometric language of the period, relying on basic bricks and standard plates to create a recognizable silhouette of a station wagon towing a mobile trailer. Because this set predates the standard minifigure system introduced in 1978, it represents a specific transitional period in the company’s history, focusing on pure construction rather than the play-narratives centered around small articulated figures that would later define the brand.
