Where it came from
Released in 2004, the Doc Ock's Bank Robbery set (4854-1) was produced to coincide with the theatrical release of Spider-Man 2. As part of a limited licensing partnership, this set captured a pivotal action sequence from the film, depicting Doctor Octopus in his attempt to rob a bank vault. It reflected the broader shift during the mid-2000s where LEGO began increasingly integrating specific cinematic narratives into its product offerings, moving beyond generic themes.
The design of the set focused on playability and scene recreation, featuring a bank interior, a vault door, and a specialized Doc Ock minifigure equipped with his signature mechanical tentacles. Created by the LEGO design team, the set aimed to balance structural detail with the kinetic energy of the source material. While it is now a sought-after piece for enthusiasts of early superhero-themed sets, its reception at the time was characterized by its role as an entry-level set for fans of the Spider-Man franchise.
