Where it came from
Released in 2004, Doc Ock's Fusion Lab (set 4857-1) was produced by the LEGO Group as part of the tie-in merchandise for the film Spider-Man 2. The set aimed to recreate the pivotal laboratory scene where Dr. Otto Octavius suffers the accident that fuses his mechanical tentacles to his spine, a defining moment in the character's cinematic arc. This set is notable for being one of the few instances where LEGO produced a dedicated set for this specific film iteration of the character.
The set was designed to capture the industrial aesthetic of the laboratory, incorporating a specialized crane mechanism and the iconic tentacles that became the set's primary play feature. It was marketed toward younger fans of the franchise during the height of the Sam Raimi film trilogy's popularity. While it was standard for its time in terms of construction, it remains a sought-after piece for collectors of early 2000s movie-licensed building sets due to the unique inclusion of the Doc Ock minifigure with his signature harness.
