Doc Ock's Crime Spree

Doc Ock's Crime Spree, released under the set number 4858-1 in 2004, was part of a promotional wave of smaller LEGO sets designed to tie into the cinematic release of Spider-Man 2. During this period, the company was expanding its licensing efforts to capture the interest of young fans following the success of Sam Raimi’s film trilogy. The set was created to provide a compact, accessible play experience that featured the iconic antagonist Doctor Octopus and his mechanical arms, reflecting the visual aesthetic of the character as portrayed in the movies.

The design of the set focuses on functional play, including a small vehicle and a simple laboratory structure that allows for the reenactment of action sequences. As a lower-cost, impulse-buy set, it was primarily distributed through mass-market retail outlets. While it does not represent the complex engineering of modern collector-grade sets, it is well-regarded by enthusiasts for its early inclusion of a specific movie-based iteration of the Doctor Octopus minifigure, marking a significant entry in the history of licensed Spider-Man merchandise.
