Where it came from
Released in 1978, the Elephants set (531-1) belongs to the early era of the LEGO Duplo line, which was introduced to provide larger, safer building blocks for toddlers. During this period, the brand focused on simple, chunky animal figures that encouraged imaginative play and motor skill development, filling a gap in the market for developmentally appropriate toys for children under the age of five.
The design of these elephants reflects the functional aesthetic of 1970s Duplo, prioritizing durable, rounded shapes and primary colors. By incorporating animal figures alongside standard blocks, the design team aimed to help young children engage in role-playing scenarios, which was a significant shift toward thematic storytelling that eventually became a hallmark of the Duplo brand's long-term success.
