Esso Stations (Pumps and Sign)

The Esso Stations set, designated 231-3, was released by LEGO in the 1960s during a pivotal era for the company as it expanded its town-planning theme. These sets were produced through a strategic partnership between LEGO and the Standard Oil Company, reflecting the corporate branding collaborations common in the mid-century period to increase the realism of miniature urban layouts. The set featured iconic modular components, including the signature red, white, and blue Esso signage and fuel pumps, which provided children and hobbyists with the modular architecture required to build authentic-looking service stations for their growing LEGO cities.

The design of the 231-3 set was characterized by the foundational aesthetic of the period, utilizing basic bricks and specialized printed elements to replicate real-world industrial infrastructure. The collaboration was intended to ground the plastic brick experience in familiar, everyday environments, effectively turning the play system into a reflection of contemporary suburban life. While these sets were eventually phased out as LEGO moved toward more abstract and fantasy-driven themes, they remain highly regarded by collectors for their historical significance as some of the earliest examples of corporate brand integration within the toy industry.
