Where it came from
Released in 1988, the Duplo Farm set 2698-1 serves as a cornerstone of the late eighties preschool building line. Designed to introduce younger children to rural life, the set reflects Lego's effort to expand their presence in the early childhood market by focusing on chunky, durable pieces that were safer for toddlers than traditional bricks. It captures a nostalgic, simplified aesthetic that prioritizes playability and basic narrative structures over technical complexity.
The design of the set focuses on primary colors and rounded, approachable figures, characteristic of the Duplo philosophy during the late twentieth century. By including a farmhouse, tractor, and various farm animals, the set aimed to foster imaginative roleplay and fine motor skills. It was well-received by parents and educators alike for its robust construction and ability to integrate seamlessly with other sets in the broader Duplo ecosystem.
