Where it came from
The Flexible Gymnast was released in 2010 as part of the LEGO Minifigure Series 2, a line designed to offer unique, blind-bagged character variants. This collection represented a shift in LEGO marketing, focusing on individual, highly detailed figures rather than traditional building sets, which allowed the designers to experiment with specialized printing and unique accessories like the gymnast's ribbon element.
The figure was conceptualized by the internal design team at LEGO to celebrate the aesthetic of professional gymnastics. It is noted for its distinctive leotard printing and the inclusion of a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon, a choice intended to give the figure a sense of motion. The series was met with significant critical success, effectively establishing the blind-bag format as a permanent and popular fixture for the brand.
