Where it came from
The LEGO City Flexible and Straight Tracks set, released in 2011, was designed to address the logistical challenges of expanding LEGO train layouts. As the City theme moved toward more complex modular track systems, builders often struggled with the rigid geometry of standard plastic curves. This set provided a solution by introducing flexible track segments, allowing for wider turning radii and more organic track placement that previous fixed-geometry pieces could not achieve.
The design of these tracks reflects a shift toward accessibility and creativity in the LEGO City line, prioritizing the user's ability to customize their rail networks over the strictly rigid patterns required by older metal-rail or early-generation plastic track systems. Upon its release, the set was widely welcomed by the AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) community, as it allowed for more realistic track switching and bypasses, effectively becoming a staple component for any serious train collector's inventory.
