Where it came from
Released in 2022 as part of the LEGO Technic line, the 42138 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was designed to bring the aggressive aesthetic and mechanical spirit of the iconic American pony car to the world of construction sets. The model captures the distinctive fastback silhouette of the real-life vehicle, which has long been a symbol of high-performance drag racing and automotive power since its debut in the late 1960s.
The design team focused on integrating two pull-back motors into the chassis, a feature specifically chosen to allow users to replicate the high-speed thrills of drag racing. By incorporating a rear-mounted control panel and a sleek, sticker-adorned exterior, the set aims to balance aesthetic accuracy with the functional playability characteristic of the Technic series. It was well-received by hobbyists for its accessible build and the clever implementation of its propulsion system within the Technic frame.
