Where it came from
The LEGO Idea Book 240-2 was published in 1980 as part of the early LEGO Universal Building Set era. During this period, the company shifted focus from providing rigid instructions for specific models to encouraging open-ended creativity. The book served as a design manifesto for this philosophy, offering visual inspiration for structures, vehicles, and scenes that could be constructed using basic bricks rather than specialized components.
The illustrations within the book were produced by the LEGO internal design team in Billund, Denmark. They prioritized a clean, minimalist aesthetic that highlighted the versatility of the system's geometry. The book was well received by the community of the time, as it bridged the gap between basic starter sets and the increasingly complex themes that would define the brand throughout the 1980s.
