Where it came from
Released in 1964 as set 221-1, Idea Book No. 1 serves as one of the foundational instructional manuals for the early LEGO System. At a time when the company was transitioning from wooden blocks to the plastic brick system we recognize today, these booklets were essential for demonstrating the versatility of the product, encouraging children to move beyond simple structures toward more creative, free-form building.
The design of the book reflects the minimalist aesthetic of the mid-1960s, utilizing clean line drawings and simple photography to showcase various models that could be constructed from existing brick assortments. It was not intended to be a step-by-step instruction guide in the modern sense, but rather an inspirational catalog designed to spark imagination and showcase the potential of the plastic building system, helping solidify the brand's identity as a tool for creative play.
