Where it came from
Released in 2011 as part of the inaugural wave of the Lego Ninjago theme, the Kai set (2111-1) was designed as a character-focused spinner set. It was created to introduce the core cast of ninja protagonists during the launch of the Ninjago television series, utilizing the brand's 'Spinjitzu' play mechanic that allowed figures to spin on a base during tabletop battle games.
The set features a minifigure of Kai, the Ninja of Fire, dressed in his original training gi. The design reflects the aesthetic of the first year of the theme, which drew heavily from traditional Japanese iconography blended with high-fantasy elements. It was received favorably by fans as an accessible entry point to the line and a essential collector's piece for those aiming to assemble the original quartet of elemental masters.
