Where it came from
Released in 2007 as part of the Bionicle 'Mahri' sub-theme, Kalmah represents a significant departure from the series' traditional terrestrial environments. Set 8917-1 portrays one of the Barraki, the warlords of the deep ocean, utilizing a unique cephalopod-inspired design that highlights the aquatic aesthetic central to the year's narrative arc.
The figure features the distinct soft-plastic squid launcher, a design choice intended to give the set a functional, projectile-based play feature that differed from the gear-driven mechanisms of earlier years. While the Bionicle line was noted for its intricate internal building systems, Kalmah is remembered for its sprawling, organic silhouette and the bold, asymmetrical design language of the Barraki faction.
