Where it came from
Released in 2018 as part of the LEGO Ninjago theme, the Katana V11 (set 70638) was designed to capture the high-speed, action-oriented aesthetic of the 'Sons of Garmadon' story arc. The set features a sleek vehicle piloted by the character Kai, incorporating a dual-mode design that allows the boat to shift into flight mode, reflecting the show's focus on versatile, tech-forward ninja equipment.
The set was developed as a mid-range entry in the Ninjago lineup, emphasizing playability through the inclusion of spring-loaded shooters and minifigures of Kai and the antagonist Luke Cunningham. It was well-regarded within the community for its aggressive, aerodynamic silhouette and its clever use of color-blocking, which solidified its place as a representative example of the mid-2010s Ninjago design language.
