Krana-Kal

The Krana-Kal were released in 2003 as a specialized sub-series within the Bionicle line, serving as the organic counterparts to the robotic Bohrok-Kal. These small, slug-like pieces were designed to be housed inside the heads of the Bohrok-Kal canister sets, representing the krana that granted the mechanical entities their intellect and elemental powers. The design aimed to convey a sense of biological infestation, featuring intricate, worm-like textures and distinct physical patterns that allowed collectors to identify the specific elemental power each krana controlled.

The introduction of the Krana-Kal was part of a larger push by Lego to expand the depth of the Bionicle lore through collectible, randomized elements. By making the krana blind-bagged or hidden within the canister sets, Lego encouraged trade and engagement among fans, effectively turning the small components into highly sought-after individual collectibles. The design was the work of the internal Lego Bionicle design team, who balanced the need for aesthetic variety with the functional requirement that these pieces fit perfectly within the established cavity of the Bohrok-Kal masks.
