Where it came from
The LEGO Large Hub (88016-1) was released as a critical component of the Powered Up technology platform. Developed by the LEGO Group, this unit was designed to serve as the central processing brain for sophisticated Technic and Education builds, offering a robust interface for motorized functions. It emerged as part of a broader shift toward integrating programmable logic and Bluetooth connectivity into traditional construction sets, replacing older, infrared-based power systems.
The design of the hub reflects a focus on utility and durability within complex mechanical environments. Engineering teams prioritized a compact form factor capable of housing six input/output ports, allowing for the simultaneous control of multiple motors and sensors. Upon its release, it was received primarily by the hobbyist and educational communities as an essential upgrade for those seeking to bridge the gap between static model-building and robotics, emphasizing ease of use through the integrated LEGO Powered Up application.
