Where it came from
Released in May 2017, the LEGO Minifigures Series 17 (71018) marked the latest iteration of the blind-bagged collectible series that began in 2010. By this point, the format had become a staple of the LEGO brand, designed to encourage social trading and the thrill of the hunt. This specific series was notable for its diverse character selection, ranging from the Highwayman to the Retro Space Hero, reflecting the designers' intent to offer a broad stylistic range that appealed to both long-time adult fans and younger builders.
The series design was overseen by the LEGO group's internal creative team, who sought to capture specific tropes—such as the Corn Cob Guy or the Yuppie—with high-quality printing and unique accessory pairings. Reception was generally positive, with collectors praising the inclusion of the 'mystery' character, the Highwayman, which provided an extra layer of engagement for the community. The series successfully maintained the momentum of the blind-bag line by blending humor with detailed character sculpting.
